A Lynsted Lane footway at last!
A good stretch of a narrow and dangerous part of Lynsted Lane between Batteries Close and Bogle now boasts a fine footway. It has taken well over twenty years to materialise! The Parish Council, under the leadership of at least four chairmen (who attended the opening ceremony - see below), has been continually pressing for this facility, so that mothers could get their children to school in relative safety.
Some funding became available a while ago, but there were several setbacks, real and imagined, to be overcome before the project could go ahead. Assistance from our county councillor Jean Newman and our borough ward councillors Richard Barnicott and Sylvia Butt served to keep the issue ‘on the boil’ during difficult months. We feel the Borough Council has produced a very attractive pathway, under difficult conditions. The mellow facing bricks are particularly appreciated. The cooperation of the affected landowners, particularly Messrs. Kent and French, is greatly appreciated.
To celebrate the creation of the footway, the Parish Council held a modest event to ‘launch’ the path on Friday 7th January at 10am, at the ‘Batteries end’ of the footway.
The Parish Council is aware that a further stretch of the Lane needs to have similar treatment. It will be pressing for the necessary funding to be made available as soon as possible.
Opening Ceremony Report
A small group of muffled figures gathered under blustery conditions near Batteries Close on the morning of 7th January. They were there to witness Parish Council Chairman Tom English officially open the new stretch of footway (‘pavement’) along Lynsted Lane. You can read what Tom English said - here.
The Phase 2 referred to will run from the south end of the current new footway, to a point opposite Bogle. When this is completed there will be a footway from London Road to Lynsted and Norton School, proving a safe route all the way for pedestrians, including mothers and children.
After the brief ceremony, guests adjourned to the Community Room for refreshments. It was a pleasure to have four past chairmen of Lynsted Parish Council present. These were, with their years ‘in the chair’: David Bage, MBE, 1979 – 1988; Jean Waters, 1988 – 1992; Fred Smith, 1992 – 1996 and Tom English, 1996 - (included in the gallery below).
