High Hopes

High Hopes for a Community Orchard
(Report from Bob Baxter, 3rd March 2005)

The orchard cultivation of cherries, although originating in nearby Teynham, and at one time widespread across the county, is sadly very much on the wane today. The Parish Council is anxious to do its bit to help ensure that the traditional culture of cherries, and the associated skills, are not entirely lost in the face of unfavourable economic forces. Luckily we have farmers in the parish who have the enthusiasm to continue with this most Kentish of fruit, and to share their knowledge with the community. The Andersons, of New House Farm, have hosted a group of children from Lynsted School for a modest tree planting project.  Pip and Sue Neaves are kindly opening their traditionally managed orchard at Park Farm for various community events.

For a while, now, a small group of parish councillors and associates have been working up a bid for funding from the Local Heritage Initiative. In August 2004, we were delighted to hear that our application had been successful. We are now in the process of carrying out our plans to enhance Park Farm orchard as a ‘community orchard’, with facilities for education and wildlife studies, and the holding of events of various kinds. Access, including for cars and those with limited mobility, has already been improved. Information boards about the cherry tradition and the plants and animals in the orchard, will soon be erected. Steps will be taken to record local orchard history and experiences. Some permanent seating has now been designed, built and sited amongst the cherry trees.
